Virgin musicians are coming

This will be my virgin year. I've been dancing for over 20 years now and am looking forward to all the belly dancers and the fun. Now, suddenly, I will be bringing a drummer, also a virgin. He wanted to know if there were other drummers and opportunities. BTW, we both play drums and melody instruments. So, he wants to know what the venues might look like. I get the Center Camp take over but what else can we get into.

Hey all!-

I live in Tucson, AZ. and am attempting to get a ride to Burningman. This is my first year and I'm really looking forward to it, but no one I know is going at the moment. I can compensate for gas and other miscellanous needs. If anyone would be willing or has questions, feel free to message me! I would really appreciate it!

I keep hearing rumors of invasions and having dreams about a large belly dance event on the playa. Some know it as Burning Bellies, some know it as the "Invasion". Some years is competes with critical tits and in my humble opinion there is no comparison. Maybe it is just that I am biased...
Braids or loose?

A friend told me that wearing her hair in braids helped to prevent "playa hair". I tried it one day but I actually got to shower pretty soon after braiding, so it was not conclusive. Anyone here have an opinion?

Magique Bazaar is looking forward to hosting some bellylicious events at our theme camp (location TBA). Of course we'd like to complement, and not overlap with, other events.

Iron Rose - will you have your hafla Tuesday night again? (Personally I hope not because I probably won't arrive until Weds morning!)

Bellydance Invasion - will it be on Thursday again?

So how does Wednesday night sound for a Magique Bazaar hafla/open floor/get your shimmies out time?

We will also have live music, magic shows, yoga classes, bellydance classes, Green Tara ritual dance, and more!

Machka Groove plus one (Kiki, Genr8r, and Connie - all of SCARAB camp) will be performing in Center Camp Thursday from 2:40 - 3pm. We've planned the end of our set to accomodate an "invasion" by our sisters of the belly!

From there we can pause to rehydrate then shimmy (or stagger) out for the 4:00 Burning Bellies meet up at the Man.

See ya sur la playa!

Hey All :) 2007 will be my first BurningMan and I'm trying to figure out what to pack regarding bellydance gear. My big concerns are MOOP, and practicality. Most of my costuming is ATS stuff, and I was thinking of Melodias (or similar style pants), standard harem pants, panel skirts, maybe a big spinning skirt, and of course choli's. Any suggestions on hip scarves? fringe belts? bling? materials?

I want to thank everyone who organized the Invasion...

to Iron Rose and Terra Nova, to the creators and drivers of the art cars that took us out to the Man...
to the drummers who played for us in the blazing sun...
to the one dancer who found me looking lost in Center Camp and brought me out to where everyone else was gathering....
to the "one cabaret dancer" who gamely danced along, and to the others who encouraged her to take a turn with a "solo"....
to the drummer who didn't make it out with us, but started his own circle near Center Camp and then let me dance in the middle....
to everyone who allowed my sister to herd us into a photo shoot...
to all of you who looked so beautiful and danced so fine, and let me join you!

I've uploaded three pictures to the group that my sister took!

I'm already making plans for next year!

So let's have some fun under that giant ball of burning gas in the sky! Basics will cover fire safety, fuels, safe costuming, candle dance, fire fingers, fire fans and maybe even poi. Bring any toys that you currently have and I'll have some tips on making your own. I endorse Riz's fire bellydance toys on firewhip.com, they're great! Let him know I sent you. I should also have samples to try. For all you beautiful people that want to see what fire bellydance is all about, please come on out! Sunday August 20, 11am until whenever for $50. Bring lots of water and snacks, sunblock, any toys you have or makings of same, and your gorgeous self! This is my last workshop before I head to Burning Man. Call me at 678-468-8408 if you have any questions about the workshop. Cya there!

Are there any other camps that are more centrally located who want to be a meet up place?

This year the invaision is going back to it roots as more of an invasion and less of a planned performance. I am excited to see you all on the playa and cant wait to dance with you all!

If your in the Destiny and 9:00 clock area on the playa stop in and say hi

Compositions and beats The Toneman and I can perform in BRC2006.
http://www.hirschiphoto.com/bb/bb.html

As far as I know we will be able to play the electronics using the sound systems in the Hookadome and the Opulent Palace. More on that later.

We can play these compositions, or a mix of beats, the same everytime so do not fear us ruining your choreography. We are both working drummers that are disciplined in the genre. We can play the compositions/beats using dunbeks when no amplification is available.
All mp3's recorded 7/22/06 by Ra and The Toneman.

Hello Ladies! I was supposed to dance at a burning man event this Wednesday the 18th of July but I broke my ankle and can't do it! Its an event for the buring man volunteers, a volunteer appreciation party. I need a bellydancer to come and perform at Shine on Wednesday night around 10 pm and do a 10 minute bellydance set. If you are intersted and or available, please let me know!! It should also be a really good social time and lots and lots of fun. Plus its a way to show your appreciation to this select group of volunteers who do soooo much for the organization. you can also email me at gina@opulenttemple.org for more information.

Love,
Gina

Billion Belly March, Fremont Solstice Parade '06

We need every Belly!
I'll be there. Come join us! You should see this. Dancers from all around the US are joining us in Seattle.
http://www.visionarydance.com/TheSolsticeParade2006.html
Blog: http://www.visionarydance.com/cgi-bin/bellyblog.cgi

It's quite an extraordinary experience, to be with so many women making such a strong statement going down the street, showing our presence to the world! It makes everybody happy in the several thousand people crowd. The kids don't believe their eyes, men are more then happy and women are so glad to see us too. I find this event to be an important one for women. There aren't that many important events such as like the Billion Belly March in the Fremont Solstice Parade. Delilah has been at it for more then 15 years... My first one was last year.

It's the expression of the free creative spirit with a strong community sense. Showing how we, women, are part of this society and can contribute in different ways then men. We are seeking national attention for this reason. Showing our presence.

Temple Memorial for instructors we've lost.

Hi folks,

Early this year, I lost one of my teachers to cancer. Luna Yatsula was one of the most inspiring, passionate women that I have had the pleasure to study with. She was the first to teach me (what I call) The Saudi Tribal dance, kHalejee. The workshop was taught in November 2004 but she taught it so well that I am still learning from it even as I practice today!

I would like to share her teachings as part of a memorial for teachers we have lost at the Temple. This would be a gathering, with part lecture about the history of the Khaligi dance and context of the dance in the Gulf, and part dance where we will learn some basic movements and dance as a tribe in Luna's memory...

I don't know yet *when* this will happen over the course of the week, right now I'm looking to find if there is any interest from dancers to participate. I am especially looking for some drummers who know the Khaleegi rhythm and would be able to accompany us as we dance.

Luna's spirit is so inspiring to me. Please take a moment to read her story here and visit her site:
http://www.lunayatsula.info/Cancer.html

This Khaligi workshop would be my memorial for Luna - but I would also like to organize a sharing circle so that we may remember and tell the stories of those women (and men) who have inspired us so much but who have passed into the light. Anyone with a story to share or teacher to remember may also post here :)

love and light

Because of so many conflicts with critical tits I think it would be good to change the date this year. I know I am usually a stickler for the same date. I still think it is important to keep the same time but lets see how the invasion works on Thursday evening instead of Friday.

Thoughts?

I recently stumbled across this site while doing some personal research:

http://www.geocities.com/shioshya/brc05inv/index.htm

I emailed the gentleman about a copy of the disc and just recieved it in the mail today. It's a very good quality disc with really nice footage of the performances and invasion.

Thought I'd throw it out there in case anyone is interested.

Hello folks! I am what is called a "Mediascape Artist" which means I provide VJ services (projections of cool video art/animations) while simultaneously DJing my original music. I will be performing at Burning Man at Sanctuary Village (4:30 and Catharsis) at 9:30 pm and I am opening up for the legendary Karsh Kale! I will be performing in a 30 foot multimedia dome at Camp Jyoti.

I would be delighted to have some belly dancers, fire dancers, anyone who loves tribal electronic music--to come join me. Please feel free to listen to the tracks I have been writing for the last couple weeks just for this special event:

http://www.psykickgirl.com/sanctuary/

Please free free to drop me a line at mckenna@psykickgirl.com to let me know what you thought of the music and if you can try to stop by. it will be very exciting and fun!

i'm working on my costume for my first burning bellies! yay! but i just started making my yarn fringe belt and it suddenly occurred to me that some of the yarn i'm using might shed. i'm so sad now! boo! i bought this lovely fluffy hairy stuff with sparkles, which pulls off easily in my hands, so that's out, but what about the standard chunky wool collinette pt 5-style yarns?

i will be so sad if i must leave it at home! but i will, if need be. sigh.

i understand that i need this much fabled permission..... but what exactly is it? a pre-printed form? a handwritten note? an email from the artist?

i could pretty easily get an email from a musician or two.... but is that enough?
what is enough?
Music and the Plan as it stands for the invasion

I posted and note to the JRS announcing the event, I have it listed on the What, When, Where (we have yet to see if it will end being magicly printed correctly this year or not) but I have not let you all know of some of the changes this year inside the Cafe.

After a ton of requests, which now I am thinking were the work on one person with different names >:) we have decided to go back to our original roots a bit. Anyone who partcipated in 2002 should remember there were a couple of comfortable soloist dancers/troupes who were dancing independantly on different stages when the invasion started, then all hell broke lose and there were dancers weaving around through out the crowd and Center Camp was over run with belly dancers.

The first part of that will be the same.. there is currently only one person who will be doing a short spotlight dance before the event although there is space for one or two more dancers (let me know if you are interested with an emai)l. In years past there were several stages in Center Camp and room for several dancer troupes to do a solo before the invasion. That is not the case this year, this year there is one multipurpose stage (that is where the spotlight dance(s) are going to happen) and a much bigger center (where we all end up before leaving to head out to the man) of center camp so we will have to work around that. After the last person/troupe is done doing their "spotlight" dance they will give a verbal cue and we will all enter, with live musicians (I hope.. IF you know any one who would be interested in being our music you would bring them along). We will dance for a bit then leave and head out to the man.

IF you are interested in doing a "spotlight" dance and you plan on using recorded music you must have with you a written copyright permission slip to have the music played in Center Camp. If that not available the cafe crew will not play your music. THe only way around that is to find musician(s) who are live performers and are not signed with any management company to play for your piece at Center Camp.

Really, this is not my thing it is the Cafe's.

I personally like having live musicans because there is a spontenitey that you dont get with music you have danced to several times, also all of the musician who have worked with us in the past have been really great and have added so much to the whole event.

So the plan is Meet at Center Camp at 5:00 pm, playa time of course.. gather around center camp at the different entrances/exits wait for the last spotlight dancer to cue (I dont know what that will be just yet but will let you know when I do ), invade for a bit in the center of Center Camp, then head out to the man, making sure to bring our fabulous musicians with us.

As far as a cue goes I would like a visual cue answered by a very loud all encompasing every exit/entrance Zagareet from everyone waiting at the exits to signal the start of the invasion.

Also if you have friends who are bellydancers of any age, shape, size, exp level, dance style please encourage them to come with you.

In 2002 at my first invasion I had only been dancing a couple of months. I was so happy to have something I could participate in even with my limited knowledge of Bellydance. Last year I dressed up one of my friends who expressed interest but didnt have any Bellydance exp and taught her some moves during the invasion.

I get emails from people all the time who say I want to participate but I have only been dancing this long... It really doesnt matter. This event to me is about getting together and celebrating bellydance..not about your exp level, the style of dance you do, or the costume you may or may not have.

one of my buddies at the brpo suggested bellygrams. did they do those before? i won't do it alone, but maybe we can do it en masse or as many as we can get together at any given request? does that sound like fun???

Anyone happen to have a wagon or some other transport that can be borrowed for this event? (a nice art car would work :) ) Something they are bringing to the playa anyway?

For the past few years I've been helping to carry water for all you dancers, becasue you often don't have any good place to put it. (Suggestion of Kat and Ivy) But it's no fun to carry a case or two of water.

-your water boy (the only time you can call me boy :) )

New To Burning Man and Bellydance

I went back in to the archives and pulled up some of the advice for when this came up last year: Lots of good advice here from lots of people the original post very similar to the title of this one if you want to see who said what or if there is something I missed reposting.

#1 rule: Do not, I repeat, do not, bring anything (costumes, etc.) that you would be heartbroken to lose. And by lose, I mean ruined. If you can't bear the thought of it, leave it home, because there is always a chance that it won't come home the same and you wan't be able to care for it or fix it.

That said:
Last year I brought 95% of my costumes. most of mine I've made myself and wasn't at all worried about. Don't bring anything that will MOOP: no loose sequins, glitter, feathers, anything that will fall off and leave trash.
I brought most of my stuff becuase I thought there might be other people who wanted to borrow it; I'll probably bring less this year.
I can't advise on hair since I don't have any. :)
We had a really good list of footwear suggestions on our old list, let me see if I can find it and copy it over, I think it's worth repeating.

your fancier stuff (coin bras, belts, etc) should at worst get a clinging layer of dust. Admittedly, the dust is corrosive and you'll want to wipe down the metal parts with simple green and hand wash things like tassels...

The only costume I didn't take was the one cabaret belt that I owned at the time. Not that it's worth a lot of money, but I'm really rather fond of it and I didn't want to take a change with it getting all dusty and me not being able to figure out how to clean it. Not to mention I don't know what I'd do if one of the bead fringes broke out there and left little tiny beads everywhere...
I didn't have a problem with anything else I took. Some things you just wash as usual when you get back (cholis, skirts, pants, etc.). My black tribal skirt was solid grey with dust when I brought it back, but I just threw it in the gentle cycle and it was fine. Some of my tassel belts I smoked out to clean them. I haven't had any problem with the tassels nor have I heard about anyone who has.
I personally don't assign a lot of value to most of my stuff, so if something happened to it, I'd be sad but not devastated. I know other people are differnt, that's why I give the disclaimer about if it's worth that much to you, leave it at home. To me, I'd rather get use out of it than have it sit in my closet and be afraid to wear it anywhere. :)
Some people make stuff specifically for BM, it's really a personal thing.

Last year I took an older skirt that i had and all of my harem pants.. I also took an older tribal bra and belt set that I have but did not take my hard to clean newer set. I also took most of my jewelery.. and all of my turbans. Your tassels should be fine, unless: it rains and mud splashes up, or they are too long and they drag in the wet mud.. For the most part anything that can get wet you can get playa out of with enough washings.. Playa can be hard on metal.. necklace from last year never did recover.. but that is okay it hurts me anyway. I would not wear any skirts that have felt or material on the the trim that dust will be hard to get out of..

Cleaning:

Last year I took a workshop (with Ivy :)) from Gwen Heckroth of Flying skirts and her suggestion for cleaning skirts was to put them in your bathroom.. Seal up your bathroom as much as possible and light 3-4 incense stick and the smoke from the incense will clense your skirts, cholis, harem pants and other stuff.. but how realistic that is for playa I dont know... one suggestion though would be put your belly dancing stuff in ziplock baggies and only take them out when needed. Hand wash the trims to your skirts and spot wash the skirt its self if needed. Be carful of putting your skirts in the wash.. I put one of my skirts in the was and it ripped apart my trim :( (it was my first skirt so I was heart broken..) but luckily got it fixed but then it was too short for me...

Nola here chiming in on a few things...
-Have FUN with your costuming for BM.
-Rememebr that it's REALLY hot. Don't plan on wearing metal next to your skin. (Thanks to Ivy for that tip last year)
-Simple Green is the best for washing out playa dust. I use it on everything.
-My long fringe skirt/belt didn't handle playa too well. Had to wash it and it lost all its shine.
-I put EVERYTHING in Zip-lock bags. Helps keep stuff clean and helps keep the clutter down so you can find it in the piles of stuff that form as the week goes on. I wash the bigger bags out and pack them away with BM stuff.

Just remember...everything, I mean, EVERYTHING will get dusted.
Even in zip-lock bags. Unless you don't open them up, that is.
Bring stuff that's easily washable/cleanable upon your return to the default world. You can still look snazzy in low maintanance costumes.

In case is was missed by anyone in the JRS ( I swear on my background as a publisher that the formatting was not my fault! When I sent it everything was good)

Calling all Belly Dancers and Middle Eastern, African, Flamenco, Moroccan influenced musicians!

It is time for the 3rd annual Burning Bellies invasion at Center Camp Café and the Man. We are looking for dancers of all ages, shapes, sizes, styles and skill levels for a large group performance in Center Camp.

This year, after a number of requests we have decided to go back to our roots a bit and do an invasion based on the 2002 Dancin’ up a Storm that inspired the Burning Bellies invasions of 2003 and 2004. We are looking for a couple of strong dancers or troupes for “spotlight” type dances, while the rest of us wind our way through Center Camp for a brief performance in the circle, then we will head out to the man.

For the performance in Center Camp we will have recorded music, then for the trip to the man to pay our final respects we would like live musicians. We have done this in years past and it has been a lot of fun. Live musicians are vital to the dance at the man, unless of course you don’t mind undulating, ummying, and mayaing to the music in your head or mine.

If interested in the “spotlight” type dance please contact Kat at bellies@burningman.com with the following information:

Name/Troupe Name
If you are in a Troupe and you all want to do something (how many members will be there)
Camp (where I can find you on the playa)
Email address, so we can chat before the playa
Type of dance you want to do for the “spotlight”
How much space you will need for the dance
Specialty (Sword, Flamenco, Skirt, etc)
Other requests?

If you are interesting in participating in the invasion and want more information please go check out our tribe at burningbellies.tribe.net. That is also the place I will post the date and time and any other events in regards to the Burning Bellies.
Announcement! Date and Time for the Cafe Invasion

Okay still working out the details with the Cafe performance team, however, the time and date for the Center Cafe invasion will be Friday September 2nd, 2005 at 4:45 to 5:15 pm. It is a little later than years past so that people who are interested doing this and Critical Tits can try and do both, if they want. This time is listed on the What When Where and the online playa calendar.

In regards to a date time/change I get just as many requests to change the date and the time as I do to keep it the same time and same date so people who have done it in the past know when it will be so the can plan around it. Unfortunatly because of the nature of the Playa, you cant make it to everything fun you want to do. I have a ton of stuff I would like to do on the playa but in reality can only make it to a small percentage of events on the playa.

I do however hope to see a lot of dancers there this year :).

YAY!

HELP!!!!! Questions for the burning community from the Playa virgin .. about creating an art exhibit

Hello All,
I am a playa virgin so if any of my questions seem to mundane or out of context please bare with me. Let me give you a little bit of background before I ask my questions, hopefully they would make more sense:

I volunteer for non profit organization based out of south bay called Sunday friends ( http://sundayfriends.org). The program is privately funded and works with homeless kids and families of the bay. Since 1997, Sunday Friends has provided a safe place where homeless and very-low-income families come together with volunteers in a community setting. Through everyday activities such as cooking, serving meals, gardening, writing letters to donors, or making cards for nursing home residents, families practice positive life skills that promote self-reliance and a healthy, productive lifestyle.
The program was hosted Every Sunday up until recently . We could not raise sufficient funds hence the program has been cut back to once a month . So I want to take an art exhibit made by the kids of the program that will help raise awareness in the Burning community about the current situation of the program and how lack of funding is hindering our ability to help the kids and preventing us form fostering positive growth. so my question:

1) Can I represent my kids work at Burning man ?
2) From those who have been going to burning man, do you think that the community would be receptive ?
3) IS their an art theme we have to follow or we can have free form art exhibits ?
4) The board is a bit weary about the decadent aspect of burning man, Do any of you see any reason how it may impact the program negatively ? Any thoughts suggestions ?
5) As a camp would you be willing to support the idea ? Or better yet who should I be talking to ? Its my first time, I do not want to impose but I do not want to jeopardize my kids hard work by the virtue of over estimating my capabilities. So yes Help would be greatly appreciated.

The Dream CO(llective)

So, many of you may be familiar with me from parties, fire performances, various sexual astrology posts, or pleas for rides between LA and San Francisco. It's possible that I've talked to (or at!) you about Dream Co(llective) and how I want to establish a travelling higher conscious show with organic food, conscious music, psychedelic art, clothing and cool shit made from recycled materials, along with information on alternative ways to live outside the box, eat healthy, heal yourself naturally, etc. All broadcast by pirate radio/internet radio of course, and transported by bio-diesel buses.
Now, I want to leave every party I throw open to donations, let people pay what they can afford so everyone who wants to, gets to come. If you know me, you know I do my work with astrological guidance and Goddess oracle advice on the same principle, helping people comes first and everything else is secondary. So here's what I'm trying to do...below is a list of some of the skills I have. It's not all of them, just the ones I can think of right now. I've lead a diverse, crazy and highly nomadic lifestyle with one of the strangest array of work skills of anyone I know, so if you need something done, chances are I can do it. I'm offering my skills in exchange for any help at all with making this dream a reality:

-Freelance writer, researcher, fact checker and editor for 10 years professionally
-Astrologer -specializing in the astrology of human sexuality and relationships
-Tarot card reader -The Goddess Guidance Oracle cards, which are source of feminine wisdom and guidance.
-PR work
-Hand drummer
-Fire poi spinner
-Erotic poet and custom writer of erotic fiction
-Photographer
-Event promoter
-Talent agent - specializing in fire artists, drummers, jugglers, circus talent, etc.
-PA (both production assistant and personal assistant)
-Gourmet chef:including vegetarian and raw
-Film editor (AVID system)
-House/pet sitter
-Dog walker
-Horse groomer
-Pirate radio station DJ/owner
-Club DJ
- Medical marijuana work
-Secretary (type 65 words per minute average speed)
-Transcriber
-Carpenters assistant, drywall assistant, painter, gardener, various other manual labor jobs
-Au pair
-Tutor for ESL students and children

I'll be travelling northward soon, hoping to throw the first Dream CO(llective) show on Hornby Island in BC on 4/20. Keep checking the Dream CO(llective) tribe for updates.

Our first show will be no later than June 21st, on the day of 24 hour daylight in either Alaska or the Yukon, currently working out locations for both to see which is most feasible. So money, materials, laptops, transport, equipment (preferably attached to people who want to come and check it out) etc are all good. I'm aware that this is a long shot, but I want all those little places that have no clue what Burning man is all about to have their eyes opened, too. We coastal communities are lucky because we have information sources to enlighten us and open our eyes. I'd like the rest of North America to get that same chance.

collaborative performance at PDF

Although I perform mainly on the burlesque and sideshow scenes here in NYC, I also dabble in performance art with the NYC Burning Man crowd.
My basic act is putting a dancer inside a six foot diameter clear balloon and letting them rock with it however they wanna go. Ive done it with gogo and improv dancers. I really want to try it with a belly dancer. Im told there are variations on tribal costume thatd be conducive to entry into the balloon. This stems from the need for the clothing to not be overly loose or baggy. That can bind up in the neck of the balloon during entry and really cause problems. Also not a lot of metallics that might tear or puncture on the way in.

Its my understanding that some of the Belly Dancing Burners from o u t s i d e NYC make it to PDF too. Im hoping to find someone whod wanna give it a go at PDF if I actually get there )Im 99% sure I will).

If anyone would be up to at least discussing it, please contact me privately.

-----
Hello,

Will you post this asap? Bhakti Rasa is a Denver based World music band who is looking for a few belly dancers to perform during their stage time on decompression night (San Francisco). Are there any local dancers going to the party who would be interested in performing with them? They will be on stage from 10:30-11:15pm. What a way to participate. Below is a copy of their email. You may look them up at www.bhaktirasa.net to learn more about them. Anyone interested in performing with them decompression night please email me directly with your ph. # to discuss details. Thanks for sending this out to your list.

Thank you everyone who came to dance in the Hookahdome. It was alive with performances every night and day, and I know some of you danced in our space. Belly dancing is our most preferred performance art in the dome, and we want our space to be perfect for it. If you danced in the dome, please convey your experience and let me know anything which we can do to enhance the experience next time.

In any case, thank you all for making BM'04 the time of our lives. What a week!

thank you Ivy for letting me hone in on your class. and thank you for organizing the invasion. since it was my first year out there i really can't compare, but i didn't need to. it was too fun. brad loved drumming with the other drummers too. perhaps more MIDDLE EASTERN drummers will have seen our beauty and care to join in the future with the african beat gods ( and goddess. )

missed hookadome completely- didn't care to stand in line, but it sounded like a good time.

I will be posting them on www.imagesbymarie-pierre.com once I have scanned them all.
I need to turn 40 photos to BM to put on the web site and for the powers that be to do what they want with them. Some of these may make their way to the site.

Please let me know if it is OK to show them that way. If it isn't,let me know too! I may be also be showing some of them in art galleries. If I do not hear from you, I will assume you are fine with being paraded around the world.

Belly Dance Boot Camp, hosted by Ivy in Wheeeeeeeville (All week), 4:00 and Venus.. (what time my dear Ivy?)

Don your fatigues and lace up your combat boots! Belly Dance Boot Camp wants you to participate!

Black Rock City suffers from a lack of belly dancing. Our prime directive this year is to bring belly dancing to people and camps in need of some serious shimmying.

Our operation is multifold:

We will undergo extensive training in dance moves and styles, music, and costuming.
We will perform, at random, subversive pre-emptive strike force operations throughout the city
We will coordinate with the Burning Bellies at large for the annual invasion of Center Camp and the Man
Recruits of any size, shape, style, or sex are welcome. We are also looking for a few good officers to lead groups and/or teach classes/workshops. Apply online here or on the playa. Base Camp will be located within the village of Wheee!ville, with a secondary operations base at the Pyramid Scheme. Please note: Belly Dance Boot Camp is only a location from which to conduct our missions. You must barrack elsewhere!

Glow Invasion,Tuesday, 9pm.
Don your finest black-light reactive belly dance gear and head with us over to the greeters station where we will shimmy for all the new arrivals! Good blacklight reactive costumes include white and flourescent colors. More black lights are still needed.

Costume Exchange, Time: Friday, Mid-afternoon (3:00 or so, you can donate stuff anytime), just before Center Camp / Man Invasion
Location: Inside the Pyramid (Pyramid Scheme 8:30 and Mercury)
Are you tired of the costumes you have? Are you lacking a piece of costuming that would complete your outfit for the Burning Bellies invasion? Do you have extra costuming you would be willing to let someone borrow for the invasion? Are you a new dancer who has not been able to put together a costume just yet, but want to dress up anyway? Did you just buy a costuming piece that made you scratch your head in wonderment at why you bought it?

If the answer is yes to any of the above questions then we may have the solution for you.

Welcome to the first annual Burning Bellies Costume Exchange (and possibly, a workshop). Do you have any costume bits you no longer want or need? Then donate them to the costume exchange! Come by, drop something off, and pick up something new. If you need a costume, come to the exchange - we’ll piece together something for you. If you are borrowing something from someone, make sure to find out where they are camped so you can return it to them after the invasion. This will go on until all costumes items are accounted for or the Center Café/Man invasion starts so come in your make up and costuming if you have any.

Center Camp/ Man Invasion, Friday 5:00 pm, meet at Pyramid Scheme at 8:30 and Mercury be there early for pictures and other fun stuff or stay from the costume exchange :).

3rd annual belly dance Cafe invasion and 2nd annual trek to the man and more!
Friday, approx 5pm.
Hordes of belly dancers, drummers and musicians will descend upon the cafe and take it over in an undulating mass before swarming out to the man and on to Andie grace (actiongrrl)'s wedding.
We generally meet up at a few differnt camps around the city (to be posted when we know locations) then meet at the cafe and BAM! take over with shimmies!
There are absoultely no requirements to participate in this, just a desire to show up and have fun. Butt shaking encouraged!

This event is how the burning bellies group got started and we encourage everyone to participate, the more the merrier!

-we will undergo extensive training in dance moves and styles, music, and costuming.

-we will perform, at random, subversive pre-emptive strike force operations throughout the city

-we will coordinate with the Burning Bellies at large for the annual invasion of Center Camp and the Man

We hope you will enlist and be all that you can be with the BRC belly dance army!

So, last night I packed most of my costumes I am planning on taking to Burning Man (boo who, I was sad to pack it away). In it I have all of my turbans accent scarves, bindi's, harem pants, three skirts, one bra and belts set and then a couple of other goodies. When I got my box full of BD costumes and realized I still had at least a half a rubbermaid container to go before I was finished packing it was then that I realized I am costume whore....

YAY costuming!

Hi Burnbellies,
Hotep California and some great horn players, drummers, etc. will be jamming on the playa at Automatic Subconscious, Biergarten, Lost Penguin, and HOTD Lounge (maybe KSVERT too if time allows). This is live music perfect for belly and wild interpretive artists. No rehearsals necessary; spontaneous improvisation is what we want. Contact Luap for stage dates/times that work for you.

Cleaning after the playa

So, I'm a newbie to BRC this year, and don't know what to expect as far as wearing costumes again after they get a fine patina of playa dust and stuff on them. I am certainly not taking my nicer bellydance costumes, but don't want to ruin whatever I decide to take with me, especially accessories and coin bras. Are they all still wear-able after being on the playa? Or should I pick out what I don't think I'll ever wear again and bring it so that I won't care when it gets ruined? What is the best way to clean them afterwards so they look as good as they did before BRC?

Hookahdome seeks bellydancers

I got this message yesterday and am passing it on as requested:

I'm from Hookahdome, a middle-eastern stlyed Esplanade theme camp, and
we're trying to round up belly dancing talent from our friends around
the playa for nightly belly dancing at our camp, and probably one big
night of dancing advertised in the printed calendar. The camp features
a large, inviting, exquisitely decorated hookah lounge (the Hookahdome),
and an outdoor fire-lit performance area alongside the esplanade. We
also have a large 12'x16' magic carpet which could be used for effect of
a grand entrance for dancers if desired.

Let me know if you're interested in organizing something on one or more
nights during BM'04, and please pass this along to your fellow dancers
to see if there's interest in possible impromptu appearances as well.

Thanks!

While cruising the calendar (http://www.burningman.com/calendar/playa/day.php) I saw A LOT!!!! of belly dance classes and events this year! Everyone should check it out!

Also, please feel free to post info about any classes/events/parties/bellydance stuff here on our tribe so we all know about it!

This will be my first year at Burning Man! I am also new to Belly dance... I've only been doing it for about a month now but I'm totally hooked!

I have found loads of great advice for newbies here in regards to the Burning Man experience but any advice you can give specifically for new belly dancers? or even more experienced dancers who may be going for the first time as well?

(clothing, cleaning, hair, makeup, footwear, etc.)
