Re: What are y'all eating?
Mon, August 2, 2004 - 7:20 PMIm here cuz Im an aspiring doumbek player but Im also looking toward NEXT year for my first BM. Im not one to rush into things unless I have logistics all figured out. So how do people usually store perishables out there (or DO they?).
Do they haul it in with them or do they purchase stuff locally?
Yeah I REALLY DONT know that much about it. -

Re: What are y'all eating?
Mon, August 2, 2004 - 8:18 PMYes people really do haul it all in...some people get all gourmet and have very elaborate group kitchen set-ups. For storage you bring coolers and replenish daily with ice. I usually go vegetarian for the week just 'cause a little mild spoilage isn't going to kill you with vegetables.
Anyway, I'm solo camping (no gourmet kitchen spread), so was just wondering what kind of yummy things other people enjoy making, particularly anything EASY.
It's a "little" off-topic but still belly-related. :-) -

Re: What are y'all eating?
Tue, August 3, 2004 - 1:37 PMIn the past my partner and i have gone with lots of pasta, camping food, trail mix, lots of pBnj sandwhiches and anything that you dont need a plate or a lot of prep time for.
Things I highly reccomend:
Tuna in the pouch,
rice in the boil in a bag
Trail Mix
pbnj makings (squeezable stuff works well because you dont need utentsils)
Cous Cous
The Indian Food pouches you get from Trader Joes or any ethnic grocery store
Taboule (you can make it before you go and put it in your cooler and it is ready by the time you get to the playa espicially if you are comming from somwhere like AZ.. or from the same distance but elsewhere).
Beef Jerky
Turkey Jerky
Spaghetti sauce/Pasta sauce in the jar..
Noodles (top rahmen gooks the fastest... water has a hard time boiling on the playa)
Furit cups work well as long as they are well sealed and kept out of the sun (we put ours under the truck)
Crackers are your friend
Some people like the Cheese in a can a sardines gourmet treat
Getting a food saver, vaccum packing some of your favorite meals from your favorite resturants, then freezing them.
The mac n cheese like velveta stuff that already has the cheese in a gel state rather than powder
Lot of Tequilla for your cereal (instead of milk)
Fresh Veggis will last a little while there but can be quite gross when the do go bad.
Canned corn
Canned Green Beans
Soup is your friend (as long as it isnt dinty moore beef or chicken stew..)most of the campbells soups you can eat right out of the can the clam chowder is good right out of the can, so are most of the chunky soups... Dinty Moore CAN NOT be eaten right out of the can you have to heat it up because there are goobules of fat and other nast crap that is in the beef stew (Trust me Naked Mike and I figured this out at TOAST this year)
Spaghetti O's
Pop Tarts
Breakfast bars (Luna Bars, OOKie bars, Cliff Bars, ATkins bars, granola bars)
There is this pasta stuff in the rice a roni, tuna helper, noodle roni, mac n cheese isle of your grocers store that is pasta and sauce ready to go.. has two flavors mac n cheese and redsauce with spirals.. you can microwave it OR drop it in the pan of boiling water in the pouches and you have still clean water, easy clean up (because they provide a little plate for you) and low energy usage... It gets dark quick on the playa.
Some people swear by back packing foods but I find them disgusting and salty....
there are also MRE's (Meals Read to Eat) that you can get at any army surplus store. some of the things are good but they are also purposly salty and will also purposly constipate you...
Premeasured/ Pre cooked servings for one or two.
Pitas and Tortillas work better on the playa than white bread.. leave the white bread at home for the birds and go with nice hearty wheat.. it will fare better.
Things I wouldnt reccomend taking to the playa:
Some thing that takes a lot of prep time.. NO one wants to spend half the night cooking and cleaning up for dinner.. there are way too many shiny blinky things that will distract you which will make your dishes disgusting.
Avoid macaroni type noodles as they take for ever to soften
Spaghetti, angel hair, Rice noodles, work better.
Fruit does not do so well on the playa .. (at least in my experience)
Things to avoid at all cost onthe playa (in my opinion of course) unless you have full blown refridgerator and genni on the playa:
Milk (I know people who take it but I wouldnt even go there)
Raw Eggs (egg goo that sits for a week in the hot air... mmmmm can you salmonella and e. choli? )
Raw Chicken.. Have you ever accidently left a tiny piece of chicken in garbage disposal all day while your at work and come home to the most disgusting smell you have ever smelled in your life? Multiply that smell times 1000....
Actually I would stay away from all raw meat onthe playa.. It is not that the meat get bad it is that you are stuck with meat goo that has to sit in the heat for a week. Last year we took a couple of steaks on the play to give to people who helped erect the pyramid. We cooked it there on Monday (I think either Monday or Tuesday ) and all was good.. He had frozen and marinated it.. the problem was with the left over stuff that was part of our liquid trash.. every morning I had to fight with my stomach to spit out my tooth paste water in the same container of liquid meat goo.. I wont be making that mistake ever again.
I am sure I will think of more but that is all I can think of.
Good luck with Planning.. Really a food saver is the way to go.. This year Naked Mike andI will be eating like royalty on the playa thanks to our food saver..
YAY Hajji Babbas Chicken
Pita Jungle Chicken
Garlic dip from Pita jungle (if I can get it home, frozen, food savered BEFORE it dissapears down my throat!
Kat who is depressed beyond all means that she cant eat hummus anymore :( :( :( -

Re: What are y'all eating?
Tue, August 3, 2004 - 9:41 PMRegarding meat goo. You can just recool the goo package. I brought raw meat on kabobs last year, wrapped in foil and baggies. After I cooked the meat, I just wrapped up the baggies and foil and put it back in the cooler. Had no smell issues.
Also, I envy your food saver! Perhaps this is the time for me to invest... -

Re: What are y'all eating?
Tue, August 3, 2004 - 11:32 PMLast year we pre-made food such as falafel with taziki sauce. If you don't mind reheating the falafel it holds up well in a zip lock bag. And the taziki can keep in the same yogurt container used in preparation. Also, we premade turkey sandwiches without all the wet stuff like tomatoes and lettuce. This was a great snack to share or in a hurry. As for tube sausage or tofu sausage, just use a zip lock. Take all sizes of this bag it will be your savior in the end. Double bag all premade food, the down side is water from your ice chest getting in. We also take a lot of box juices and energy drinks. Liquids in all forms are good. -

Thu, August 5, 2004 - 5:49 PMKat,
I DEMAND that you bring me pita jungle goodness.
I want one of EVERYTHING; I'll just come to the pyramid when I'm hungry.
I love you. I miss pita jungle. -

Re: What are y'all eating?
Thu, August 5, 2004 - 6:00 PMI might have to invest in a case of MREs from a military surplus store. This sounds waaaay too complicated. -
-
Re: What are y'all eating?
Thu, August 5, 2004 - 11:18 PMMREs = efficient
MRE's = YUCKY tasting. ;D
Don't worry, sweetie, eating on the Playa sounds more complicated than it really is. But I do suggest stocking up on your energy bar of choice and gatorade. -

Re: What are y'all eating?
Tue, August 10, 2004 - 10:49 AMsome things Kat didn't mention that i can't live without:
1--Emergen'C packets (vitamin-rich beverage mix) I drink two of these every morning to keep away hangovers and general vitamin deficiency (and I definitely feel the difference when I haven't been drinking them!)
2--cans of ravioli (i guess this would fall in with soup, but...) the great thing about eating straight out of the can is that you can just put it (the still-sealed can) in a sunny place for an hour or so and suddenly you have hot food. It's awesome!
3--canned oysters (delicious atop flavored triscuits and aerosol cheese!) and vienna sausages. I had a boyfriend once who liked to heat the cans (as above) and drink the juice afterward. I thought it was gross, but again... extra vitamins.
also slimfast shakes, premixed cold salad things to eat with crackers (think chicken or krab or coleslaw type stuff), and anything that says "just add water".
oh, and water. lots of it.
