I want to thank everyone who organized the Invasion...
to Iron Rose and Terra Nova, to the creators and drivers of the art cars that took us out to the Man...
to the drummers who played for us in the blazing sun...
to the one dancer who found me looking lost in Center Camp and brought me out to where everyone else was gathering....
to the "one cabaret dancer" who gamely danced along, and to the others who encouraged her to take a turn with a "solo"....
to the drummer who didn't make it out with us, but started his own circle near Center Camp and then let me dance in the middle....
to everyone who allowed my sister to herd us into a photo shoot...
to all of you who looked so beautiful and danced so fine, and let me join you!
I've uploaded three pictures to the group that my sister took!
I'm already making plans for next year!

Thu, September 7, 2006 - 8:54 AMI was at Iron Rose at the alloted time. Nobody knew a thing about invasion. I went to the 9:00 area of center camp. No dancers anywhere. Did the time get changed or was I in another dimension?
At least the performance at the Opulent Palace happened where and when it was suppossed to happen and it was excellent. -

Thu, September 7, 2006 - 10:11 AMIt didn't seem like we were in Center Camp for very long, but I had no concept of time. It was a blast hopping in one of the crazy Belly Buses and going out to The Man.

The capoeirists didn't want us in the circle, some officious bureaucrat (sorry, I'm sure he was really a nice guy, but he sure came across as an officious bureaucrat) objected to us being near the stage ("You're totally drowning out the singer," he said to me. And then, witheringly, "There's a drum circle over there." I just stared at him until Heidi came over to talk to him, and then we climbed on the bus and off to the Man.) -

That's absurd! It's like sending a group of ballet dancers to a death-metal band.
The last few years have turned me off to center camp. I avoid it.
They won't allow a specialized group of costumed dancers to invade for 12 minutes but they allow the drum circles to invade 24 hours a day.

Thu, September 28, 2006 - 12:49 PMyeah, we missed you guys because you hopped on the bus :( we showed up and people were still gathering. Took off to grab a drink from our nearby camp (in center circle) came back out and poof! no one.
we had wrongly assumed that there was going to be a shimmyathon out to the man and that we'd have time to catch up. By the time we walked out to the man everything was finished. However we did manage to dance on the spiny photo thing underneath the man and take a great flip book of ourselves!

We left camp spot on time, with all the folks in camp who knew about it, on the car! By the time we got to Center Camp, the other bellies had already been kicked out so we commandeered a second art car and zipped out to the man. Not a 'normal' invasion by any means.

Fri, September 8, 2006 - 10:21 PMI *raced* over to Iron Rose after the Chinese Dragon event and asked breathlessly, "Did I miss the group doing the bellydance invasion?" Someone looked up languidly from chatting and massaging, and I thought she said "yes", so I raced off to Center Camp. Seemed like I wandered around there for quite a while before someone found me and directed me outside. (I didn't have a watch.) So I can understand how you missed it, Ra. What a bummer! I was a "virgin", too, and had a blast! -

The 'invasion' is different every year - every year something gets fucked up, and most things are wonderful. All part of the experience...
And huge thanks to the art cars (esp you Heidi!) and the water bearers (Naked Mike as always and some guy who was helpful but kinda stalker-ish.
And of course our fabulous drummers!
Can't wait for next year. Theme is 'The Green Man' so start on those costumes!

Looks like my snarky little dancer followed us home!!
I just wanted to toss in my two pence and say thank you as well. This was my first visit to the playa, my first invasion, my first time dancing in the desert...well, you get the picture. I loved the entire experience and so look forward to doing it all again next year. You are all beautiful!
