So, I'm a newbie to BRC this year, and don't know what to expect as far as wearing costumes again after they get a fine patina of playa dust and stuff on them. I am certainly not taking my nicer bellydance costumes, but don't want to ruin whatever I decide to take with me, especially accessories and coin bras. Are they all still wear-able after being on the playa? Or should I pick out what I don't think I'll ever wear again and bring it so that I won't care when it gets ruined? What is the best way to clean them afterwards so they look as good as they did before BRC?

Re: Cleaning after the playa
Tue, August 10, 2004 - 11:09 AMHey Summer,
I bumped a thread to the top that has some answers to your questions and more! in it. It's called "New to BD and BM."
Hope that helps. -

Re: Cleaning after the playa
Tue, August 10, 2004 - 11:19 AMThanks, Ivy! So I gather that while most simple items in my wardrobe (circle skirt, harem pants) will be, for the most part, fairly cleanable and okay upon return to the real world, things that can get goopy and pasty from the dust like tassles should stay home. I've heard coin bras can make it home okay once they get a good washing in vinegar or something acidic. Anyone else have experience with this? Does this work on metals in general after playa dust? -

Re: Cleaning after the playa
Tue, August 10, 2004 - 2:59 PMEverything that can't go in my washing machine (but is OK to get wet) gets cleaned with Simple Green. This goes from the rubber on the rental van to the coins on my bra. It does an awesome job on everything. Don't forget to clean your zills post-playa. I did and they looked pretty corroded after a couple months.

Re: Cleaning after the playa
Tue, August 10, 2004 - 3:34 PMI don't think "goopy" or "pasty" are the right words. unless you dunk them in water and then rub them on the ground, your fancier stuff (coin bras, belts, etc) should at worst get a clinging layer of dust. Admittedly, the dust is corrosive and you'll want to wipe down the metal parts with simple green and hand wash things like tassels...
I actually like to leave the dust on some of my non-metal things so that I can smell the playa throughout the year when I'm getting dressed.
are we there yet?

Re: Cleaning after the playa
Fri, August 13, 2004 - 12:32 PMwelcome summer,
playa dust is like that stain from the Dr. Seuss book, "The cat in the Hat'. it never really goes away, it just gets on other things.
