Thank you everyone who came to dance in the Hookahdome. It was alive with performances every night and day, and I know some of you danced in our space. Belly dancing is our most preferred performance art in the dome, and we want our space to be perfect for it. If you danced in the dome, please convey your experience and let me know anything which we can do to enhance the experience next time.
In any case, thank you all for making BM'04 the time of our lives. What a week!

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Thu, September 9, 2004 - 5:49 PMJust would like to add that we could not get into the dome. Maybe make it a little bigger. There appeared to be a line every time we passed or it was closed. Too bad cause it was in a great location. -

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Fri, September 10, 2004 - 9:17 AMI had amazing experiences dancing at the dome. I want to gratefully thank everyone who made that dome possible, and all the people who put their good vibes and energy into it. It was one of, if not THE, best places I've every performed, with the warmth and love and positive energy flowing through every inch of that space! Thank you! -

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Fri, September 10, 2004 - 10:50 AMThe line is a big topic for us for next year. Admittedly, the popularity caught us off guard a bit, and the line was the only way we could think of to keep the vibe inside right. Note that the line also functions excellently as a yahoo filter - the crowd inside really wants to be there. But still it definitely kept lots of wonderful people out too. We are on it :)
Note, that if you are coming to perform, the line does not apply to you and your friends. Let the doorman know and we will cater to your performance. The whole place is made for you, after all.
We're really sorry you couldn't experience the space!

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Fri, September 10, 2004 - 12:16 PMI didn't perform there, but while I'm at it, I also want to say thank you for the great space- I ended up there with my boyfriend on Tuesday, to beat the heat of the day, and while it was PACKED, there was not yet a line..... we looked forward to coming back later in the week, saw that there was a line, and then we just gave it up as another Disneyfied kind of thing--- it was our first year, and it freaked us out that there were LINES for all the cool stuff.
Ah well. But again, it was fabulous! -

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Fri, September 10, 2004 - 12:53 PMOver-packed Hookahdome is bad - stuffy, hot, crowded, less room for performance, difficult/stressful to serve guests and tend hookahs.
Lines are bad - annoying wait, Disney stigma, VIP stigma, spawns nefarious behavior (scams to sneak in), quells front-of-camp energy.
So on the playa we did a little of both during the week, and thankfully the result was overwhelmingly good, not bad :) But of course our logical minds are busy concocting ways to get as close as possible to the best of both worlds for next year. If anyone has ideas to contribute, please post them up on the Hookahdome tribe we have created for this purpose!
Thanks,

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Fri, September 10, 2004 - 1:00 PMSadly, I didn't make it to BM this year...but I have vowed to be there next year! Maybe put windows in the dome cover? That way the people who want to see what's going on can do so without standing in line... -

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Sat, September 11, 2004 - 3:18 PMMaybe put a taller stage in the center and make the dome bigger. Or extend openings to the outer spaces available. All art should be made available for everyone to see. I understand the vibe, but I really feel like I was kept out :( Oh well, maybe next year. -

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Sat, September 11, 2004 - 4:12 PMTaller stage - hmm... I have to think about that one. It might take away from the feeling of togetherness in there. And of course the large beautiful Indo Heriz carpet in the center wouldn't fit.
Someone mentioned adding a window. We've talked about this too, the idea being many folks in line just want to know what's going on, not necessarily interested in staying in there if only they knew. Problem with the window is inside the dome would feel like folks are watching you - less private.
Some have suggested video feed for the same approach, but I'll be caught dead when there's cameras in the dome.
Bigger dome? Don't say that! :) We really really don't want to re-build the dome. We just finished building this one a couple months ago! Anyway, this would probably work, though it'd make everything more difficult for us to set up, etc. and we have to re-do the carpeting, covering, etc. and bigger might mean less cozy. It's not out of the question though.
One big main idea is to have a no sleeping rule. Unconscious people aren't good dome energy anyway, most think. This is our leading approach. Sleeping people take up more room and bring down the energy. We'll have to present a list of rules as people enter then. This should go far.
Anyway, there's some thoughts, thanks for the input! We made a Hookahdome tribe to carry on these types of conversations in - I know this is a bit off-subject from this tribe.
I know the line sucks and we're really sorry you got the feeling you did from it. We will definitely improve things for next year.

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Mon, September 13, 2004 - 10:20 AMAs much as I can understand the "no sleeping people" rule- the one mid-afternoon that I was there, there were quite a few sleeping people, and it seemed to not take much away- everyone was pretty lethargic anyway, even if they weren't sleeping. It's one of my best memories from Burning Man, snuggling up around one of the dome edges, on some pillows with my sweetie, and watching him nap peacefully with a smile on his face, while people talked and connected and just hung out, all around us.

This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Mon, September 13, 2004 - 12:42 PMGood feeling absorbed... Others have said the sleeping makes for a pleasant experience too.
All this input is good - lets us make an objective analysis. Thanks!

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Sun, September 12, 2004 - 9:40 PMI wanted to come into the dome, but there was the line factor (already stated) and entering the establishment required removing my footwear. I was having major foot issues and had to wear the big daddy boots which take quite a long time to get on and off (lots of buckles and laces, but very orthopedically correct). Maybe next year... It looked real cool, tho.

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Mon, September 13, 2004 - 1:21 PMI loved the Hookahdome, but it was hard to get back in the later part of the week. When I visited the first time, I was invited to come back and dance, but everytime I returned, there was a line, and almost a New York style nightclub feeling--like only the coolest people could gain access. Apparently, I was not cool enough! The people at the door were really vague about why they couldn't let people in...they seemed really confused.
It was such a great space, and the music was beautiful. I just hope it can be more inclusive next year. -

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Mon, September 13, 2004 - 1:29 PMFawnee- did you tell the doorperson you were a dancer coming to perform? If you did, they would have treated you like a rock star. The Hookans were incredibly accommodating and appreciateive of their performers...don't let the line fool you next year!

Re: Bellies at Hookahdome
Tue, September 14, 2004 - 1:05 PMHi Soren:
I visited Friday night after the invasion and danced with veils and pulled a young dancer out with me. I wore black furry pants and a tail with my tribal gear. Forgot to say 'hi'! But thanks for the terrific atmosphere and great place to dance!
